Ryan Perez (Oceanside, CA. 1982) identifies as Filipino and Mexican and developed his ideas about art and photography from his experience living in Southern California. Perez often takes photographs while driving around and running errands with his family and creates self-identified landmarks between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley. As a result, he understands these images as a way to acknowledge the disconnect between how he imagines the landscape and his existence within a complex matrix of social conditions and histories. In his imagination, buried in the landscape, is a narrative of capitalism, war, colonization, unrest, life, and death.

Perez has exhibited at sites including the LACMA, the UC Riverside Sweeney Art Gallery, the California Museum of Photography, Riverside, CA; the Yautepec Gallery, Mexico City, Mexico; the C24 Gallery, NY, NY; the Steve Turner Gallery, LA, CA; the Samuel Freeman Gallery, LA, CA; the Fulcrum Press, LA, CA; the Control Room, LA, CA; and The Brand Library Art Gallery, Glendale, CA.

Perez's studio is in Monrovia, CA, and he teaches at ArtCenter College of Design.
